blog Assignment 1/24/11

Since you have started working on your team games, you have completed independent learning, by going to either the Globaloria curriculum or sites on the Internet to help you in developing code for your games. In at least three sentences, tell me where you went to gain additional knowledge, what you learned, and insert in your blog post a link to the site.

- So far what I have completed on my portion of our game is the design of our title page. I have used google images to get a picture to trace as well as an ipad website that relates greatly to our game because it show the particular parts of the ipad. I have not done much with code yet, but I am just about ready to begin it, as well as add buttons which I have reviewed again from the globaloria site.

Blog Prompt 1/7/11

Share your learning experience on the Collision Detection topic.

I thought the collision detection activity was very interesting, copying the tutorial was simple, but the code usually takes me a minute to figure out where to put it. I did have a member of our team show me where it went and it worked fine after that.

  • Did you find the Collision Detection tutorial useful?

  • - Yes, I think that we might be able to use the tutorial as a good example for when we get more in depth with work on our game.

  • Will you use some of the codes provided in the ball and platform sample as well as, the keeping objects from flying off the stage code on the wiki?

  • - Yes we may use that further in our game for when the main character fights an enemy.

  • Did you like the Fly Catcher game?

  • Yes it seemed like a very simple, fun game but the code on it was just as long as any other game.

  • Will you be able to use the code from fly catcher game in your team Stem games?

  • - We might be able to use it to help our character collect certain objects in our game.

How do you plan to use sound in your game?
We plan to use it with characters and scenes, and the buttons.
How will it help enhance the game play and learning experience of your game?
It adds effect and give the player a better understanding about what's going on.

    Blog Assignment 12/10/10

Can your game be both a Civics and Stem Game?
Yes I do believe that our game can involve both civics and stem, but it depends on how you look at the subject. Our game would involve a missing/stolen ipad, so it can relate to civics in how a law was broken or rights were violated when someone stole it. It particularly relates to STEM, because it falls under the technology category and mostly involves technology.
Please list five game ideas that could be both Civics and Stem Games.

    1. A game that might involve electronic voting to win win an election.
    2. A game where someone uses a gps to navigate through town to get to jury duty.
    3. A game where a computer messed up the constitution and you have to correctly re-arrange it.
    4. A game where you use a satellite to bounce important news information to the people via television, or web.
    5. A game where you use current technology and watercraft and the oceans currents to help clean up an oil spill.

    Blog Assignment 12/2/10

Reflect on the class so far. Do you like working in flash? Why or why not?

When I first came into this class I was not sure what it would be like. I know it is more challenging than I thought it would be, but I have learned a lot more about programs on the computer this year than I have in recent years. Sometimes the flash can be difficult, (mostly the code involved), but I do enjoy working with the program and seeing how everything comes together to create a scene or action.

    Blog Post 11/19/10

    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPad_Wi-Fi

I found this resource on my own and found that it related to our game. It really relates well to our game because the link brings you to a website that shows you how to take apart an ipad, and our game is about finding and putting together pieces of an ipad. It is also relevant because it deals with the topic of technology, which is the focus of our game in general.

    Blog Post for 11/12/10

Creating scenes in a sequence helps game designers tell the "story" of their game through a narrative. How are you using visual storytelling through your sequence of scenes to help players learn about your topic?
    - Basically as our main character Oscar travels throughout the levels, his interactions with the characters will tell the storyline.

What are examples of games you played in the Playing to Learn topic that use storytelling to teach a concept well?
-The game WV animal rescue squad does a good job of describing it's topic of properly taking care of your pets.

How have other narrative games influenced your game?
    - The specific type of information each game provides helps give us an idea about the setup and gameplay that might take place in our game. For example, compared to mario we have similar platforms to avoid objects.
